Prototype freight consists, including reefer blocks, were rarely uniform. Typical reefer consists included the occasional excess length and height car, sometimes several in a row. Pacific Fruit Express’ movement of frozen food provides such an example. During World War II, the technique of freezing food to prolong its usable life became commonplace. After World War II, frozen food became an even more important part of the PFE car loadings. Competition, principally from the Santa Fe, required a car specifically designed for frozen food service with greater height and length and increased insulation. The R-50-5 rebuilding was the answer.The 47 long R-50-1s (known as the «Giants»), purchased in the Thirties, were selected for upgrading. They were 5″ taller and 5′ longer inside than the contemporary 40′ wood cars. Rebuilding of R-50-1s began in 1945 and continued into 1947. The resulting car was designated the R-50-5. The R-50-5s supplemented the 52′ long R-70-2s (the «Super Giants») in frozen food service. The two car designs were like Mutt and Jeff. The R-50-5 was 7″ taller than the R-70-2, but 5′ shorter in length. The two provided an interesting contrast in a block of frozen food reefers. The R-50-5 rebuilds received straight paneled steel roofs and 4/4 «W» section Dreadnaught ends. The cars received abundant insulation to protect the frozen cargo. New ice bunkers with integral ice hatch plugs and covers were installed. Apex metal running boards were added. The R-50-5s retained their A.R.A. cast side frame trucks from the Thirties. The rebuilding brought the R-50-5 to the current standards, common to the parallel program of 40′ rebuildings. Sunshine’s HO scale R-50-5 kits are produced in gray resin. They include a solid roof casting, etched metal running board and proprietary decals. A variety of decals appropriate for the selected time period are available. All the necessary parts are included except couplers and trucks. A Prototype Data Sheet, containing extensive research and a photograph, and instructions with model photographs are part of the kit.
