eBay This listing is for a matching PAIR (two) of black «rush seat» side chairs. I do not know who made the chairs, but I suspect the chairs themselves may have been commercially manufactured, given the collection they came from, likely in the early 1980s. What makes these chairs truly special is the delicate floral hand painting on the three back slats. The collection from which these chairs originated included a large quantity of Susan Fisher («Brown-Eyed Susan») toleware and miscellaneous pieces. There is no makers mark on either of the chairs, but in my opinion the hand painted floral and fruit designs serve as their own maker’s mark. I feel 98% certain that the hand painting was done by Susan Fisher. It is so precise and delightful. Each side chair (chair with no arms) is made of wood and is painted in a semi-gloss black. The seat is woven of off-white twine to resemble a rush seat. There is a singe stretcher in front and on each side. There are three wide slats across the back, on which lovely fruit and floral designs are hand painted in colorful earth tones. This pair would be a lovely addition to almost any type of room, across a wide range of time periods.
